Dreaming of taking a canal cruise through Amsterdam? It’s one of the best activities in the summer, and you’ll never know what you’ll see from the canals. But like every iconic experience, there are a few pitfalls that can ruin the vibe. Here’s what the locals know:
1. Skip the giant tourist cruise boats 🚢
The views are more limited than you’d think, and the experience feels rushed. Opt for a smaller boat — you’ll get closer to the canal walls, duck under charming bridges, and actually soak it all in.
2. Bring a charcuterie board 🧀🍷
This is the move. Load it up with local Dutch cheeses, a bottle of French wine, some fresh veggies — and yes, fries absolutely belong on a charcuterie board when you’re in Amsterdam. Eat well, float slowly, live your best life.
3. Stop off at a canal-side spot 🍺☕
Some of Amsterdam’s best local restaurants, cafés, and ahem coffee shops have their own docks — so you can pull right up and take a pit stop for a coffee, a cold beer, or whatever other “essentials” you might need. It’s the most Amsterdam thing you can do, and most tourists on the big cruise boats never get to experience it.
